Demos In the Living Room

Above, Christian Coleman peruses an issue of Nat Geo while I sneak a snap (when I should’ve been hooking up microphones.)

This past sunday I was asked to do a quick, in-and-out multi-track demo for a few local Jazz musicians, lead by Broc Hempel on piano. Also in the session was Sam Trapchak on bass, and Mr. Coleman, pictured above. The purpose of the session was to record about an hours’ worth of music which would be distilled down to a four-track-long calling card for paid restaurant gigs. “Hey, here’s us playing. Book us, please.”

“Sao Paolo”

“Secret Love”

Listening to what the performers shrug off as a “demo” can be just as exciting. My work included, they’re full of imperfections — the good kind.
